How Much Are Lab Grown Diamonds Worth in Resale? India 2026 Guide
When people ask about the resale value of a lab grown diamond, they usually expect one clear answer. In reality, there is no fixed resale rate.
The amount can be very different when you sell it in the open market, use a brand’s buyback policy or exchange it for another piece.
In India in 2026, lab grown diamonds do have resale value. However, an open-market sale and a brand-backed policy can give you very different results.
How Much Resale Value Can You Expect?
In the open market, a lab grown diamond may recover around 20% to 40% of its original purchase price. A mined diamond may recover approximately 40% to 60%.
These are market estimates, not fixed or guaranteed rates. The final quotation can be higher or lower.
The actual amount of money involved gives a clearer picture.
| One Carat Diamond | Purchase Price | Example Resale Rate | Amount Received | Amount Not Recovered |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mined diamond | ₹2,50,000 | 50% | ₹1,25,000 | ₹1,25,000 |
| Lab grown diamond | ₹40,000 | 30% | ₹12,000 | ₹28,000 |
The lab grown diamond returns a smaller percentage in this example, but the amount not recovered is also much lower. This is why it is better to check both the resale percentage and the actual rupee difference.
These figures are only an illustration, not a future resale quote.
Why Current Diamond Prices Affect Resale Value
When a jeweller values a pre-owned lab grown diamond, it is compared with the current price of a new diamond having similar specifications. If new diamond prices have decreased, the resale offer may also be lower, even when the older diamond is in good condition.
This is why resale value depends more on the current market price than the amount originally paid.
How to Sell or Exchange Your Lab Grown Diamond Jewellery
The same piece can receive different values through these three routes.
-
Open-market resale: You sell to another jeweller, reseller or buyer. There is no common rate, so quotations can vary widely.
-
Brand buyback: The original brand purchases eligible jewellery according to the formula written in its policy.
-
Brand exchange: The eligible value is adjusted against another purchase. The exchange percentage can be higher than the cash buyback percentage.
How Is Your Buyback Amount Calculated?
The buyback amount is generally calculated using the jewellery’s prevailing market value, not simply the total shown on your original invoice.
If a policy offers 80% of the prevailing market value, the diamond is first valued at the market rate applicable when you request buyback. The stated percentage is then applied to that value. This does not automatically mean you will receive 80% of your original purchase amount.
Your bill may also include gold, making charges, GST and shipping charges. These amounts, along with any discounts, may be treated separately or excluded from the buyback value.
How Lukson’s Lifetime Buyback and Exchange Work
Under Lukson’s current policy for eligible gold jewellery, the gold or metal is valued at 100% of its prevailing market value based on net metal weight.
For lab grown diamonds, Lukson provides:
-
Lifetime buyback: 80% of the prevailing market value
-
Lifetime exchange: 90% of the prevailing market value
Making charges, GST, shipping charges, discounts, vouchers and promotional benefits are not included in the buyback or exchange value.
The original invoice, product certificate and valid government photo ID are required. Every request is also subject to authentication, quality inspection and the eligibility conditions mentioned in the policy.
What Can Change Your Final Resale Offer?
The final resale amount can change because of:
-
Diamond certificate: The grading report helps verify the diamond’s origin and specifications.
-
Gold purity and net weight: The metal portion is calculated separately from the diamond.
-
Product condition: Damage or changes made by another jeweller can affect policy eligibility.
-
Purchase invoice: The original invoice helps confirm where and when the jewellery was purchased and whether it qualifies under the brand’s policy.
How to Maximise the Resale Value of Your Jewellery
Resale value is easier to protect when you check the terms before buying. Choose a jeweller with a clearly written buyback and exchange policy instead of relying only on verbal promises.
-
Buy jewellery with a recognised diamond certificate.
-
Confirm whether the percentage applies to the original price or prevailing market value.
-
Ask how the gold and diamond portions will be valued.
-
Check which charges, such as making charges and GST, will not be returned.
-
Keep the invoice and certificate safely.
-
Use the original brand for resizing or repairs when possible, as third-party alterations may affect eligibility.
Also, do not pay extra for a complicated design expecting its making cost to be recovered later. Resale value is generally based on the gold, diamond and applicable brand policy.
