How Are Lab Grown Diamonds Created?

Lab grown diamonds are primarily created using two methods: CVD and HPHT.

CVD Diamonds

CVD stands for Chemical Vapour Deposition. In this process, a small diamond seed is placed inside a specialised chamber filled with carbon rich gas. The gas is activated, allowing carbon particles to gradually settle on the seed and form layers of diamond.

HPHT Diamonds

HPHT stands for High Pressure High Temperature. This process uses intense pressure and heat to recreate conditions similar to those in which natural diamonds form beneath the earth. Carbon crystallises around a small diamond seed and develops into a rough diamond.

After the growing process is complete, the rough diamonds are cut, polished, and graded according to their cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight. Both CVD and HPHT methods can produce high quality diamonds suitable for fine jewellery.

Lab Grown Diamond Clarity Grades

Lab grown and natural diamonds are graded on the same clarity scale. Clarity refers to the inclusions present inside a diamond and the blemishes visible on its surface under 10× magnification.

How Does Lab Grown Diamond Clarity Compare with Natural Diamonds?

Lab grown diamonds are not automatically clearer than natural diamonds. Both can contain inclusions and are graded using the same internationally accepted clarity scale.

The type of inclusions may differ because of how the diamonds are formed. Natural diamonds develop inside the earth, while lab grown diamonds are created through CVD or HPHT technology in controlled laboratories.

At Lukson, we generally use lab grown diamonds within the VVS1 to VS2 clarity range. In these grades, inclusions are usually difficult to see without magnification, allowing the diamonds to maintain a clean appearance when set in jewellery.

Why Are Lab Grown Diamonds More Affordable Than Natural Diamonds?

Lab grown diamonds generally cost less because they are created in specialised laboratories and do not depend on rare geological formation and mining.

Natural diamonds require exploration, mining, sorting and a longer supply chain before they reach the jewellery market. Lab grown diamonds follow a more controlled production process and can be produced in greater quantities.

This difference in production and availability allows customers to choose a larger diamond, a higher grade or a more detailed jewellery design within the same budget.

Lab grown diamonds are more affordable, but they still have the same fundamental chemical, physical and optical properties as natural diamonds.

IGI vs SGL Certification for Lab Grown Diamonds

IGI and SGL are independent gemological laboratories that issue grading reports for lab grown diamonds. Both laboratories can identify the diamond’s origin and assess its quality using the 4Cs: cut, colour, clarity and carat weight.

A certificate does not improve or reduce the quality of a diamond. It records the characteristics identified by the grading laboratory and helps the buyer verify the details provided by the jeweller.

IGI officially states that its loose diamond reports identify natural or lab grown origin and record the 4Cs. Its report number can also be laser inscribed on the diamond’s girdle.

SGL states that its lab grown reports record the diamond’s origin, 4Cs, measurements, proportions, fluorescence and plotting information. It also provides reports for both solitaire lab grown jewellery and jewellery containing multiple lab grown diamonds.

Both institutes offer laser inscription services for applicable diamonds.

Which Certification Is Better: IGI or SGL?

It would not be correct to say that one certification automatically makes a diamond better than the other. The diamond’s actual cut, colour, clarity, carat weight and appearance remain more important than the name printed on the certificate.

Before purchasing, check:

1. Whether the report clearly identifies the diamond as lab grown
2. Whether the report number can be verified online
3. Whether the report number matches the laser inscription, where applicable
4. Whether the carat, colour and clarity match the product information
