The Story Behind Selena Gomez’s Marquise Diamond Engagement Ring
Some celebrity engagement rings become famous because of their size. Others because of their price. Selena Gomez’s engagement ring had something more interesting going for it: a story that started almost a decade before Benny Blanco proposed.
When Gomez announced her engagement in December 2024, the ring immediately stood out. At the centre was an elongated marquise diamond set against yellow gold and a diamond pavé band, a noticeably different choice from the round and oval diamonds that had dominated celebrity engagement rings for years. But Blanco had not simply chosen an unusual diamond shape to make the ring look different. The marquise already had a personal connection to Gomez.
The Marquise Diamond Was a Longtime Dream for Selena Gomez
The story goes back to 2015, when Gomez referenced marquise diamonds in her song Good for You. Years later, while discussing her engagement ring, she confirmed that the shape had remained in her mind since that period and described it as the diamond she had always dreamed of.
That history gives the ring a completely different meaning. It was not a case of seeing a popular engagement ring and choosing something similar. The marquise centre stone connected the proposal to a detail from Gomez’s own past, and Blanco knew that when he started working on the ring.
He collaborated with Katherine Theofilos Claster and Stephanie Theofilos of jewellery house Abril Barret to develop the custom piece, going through several versions before arriving at the final design. Instead of adding an obvious engraving, birthstone or external symbol to make the ring personal, the meaning was built into the diamond shape itself.
The Original Ring Design Was Actually Different
The final ring was not the first version considered during the design process. Early plans included large baguette diamonds beside the marquise centre stone, which would have made the ring even more substantial.
Gomez eventually decided she did not want the finished piece to feel quite so large, so the baguettes were removed. Blanco later said the unused diamonds would be turned into earrings for her.
That change arguably made the final design stronger. With a centre stone as distinctive as a marquise, large side diamonds could easily have competed for attention. By removing them, the designers allowed the shape and proportions of the centre diamond to remain the main feature of the ring.
What Does Selena Gomez’s Engagement Ring Look Like?
The ring features a natural marquise diamond set on a yellow gold pavé band. Jewellery experts who examined photographs have given different estimates for the centre stone, generally placing it somewhere between five and eight carats. Estimates of its value have also varied, with several experts putting it above $225,000, although neither the exact carat weight nor the value has been publicly confirmed.
What makes the design interesting is not simply the size of the diamond. The stone sits in a cathedral style setting, where the shoulders of the band rise towards the centre, giving the diamond height while keeping the overall design balanced. The marquise is held by six prongs, with additional protection around the pointed ends, which are one of the most recognisable features of the shape.
The band also plays an important role. Instead of pairing such a large centre stone with an extremely thin band, the designers chose a more substantial yellow gold pavé band. The smaller diamonds add sparkle around the centre stone, while the wider band creates enough visual weight to balance the scale of the marquise. The result feels glamorous without looking as though details were added simply for the sake of making the ring bigger.
Why the Marquise Shape Makes the Ring So Recognisable
A marquise diamond is difficult to confuse with another shape. Its curved sides taper into two pointed ends, creating a long, narrow silhouette that looks noticeably different from a round, oval, emerald or princess cut.
The shape has an interesting combination of softness and sharpness. The curved sides keep it elegant, while the pointed tips give the diamond more character and make its outline instantly recognisable. Its elongated profile can also give the stone a strong presence when viewed from the top, which helps explain why marquise diamonds can look impressive on the hand.
Gomez’s diamond takes full advantage of those proportions. Jewellers who examined the ring described the centre stone as well balanced: it is not excessively narrow, but it still has enough length to retain the elegant silhouette associated with the marquise. A stone that is too wide can lose some of that elongated appearance, while one that is extremely narrow may begin to look stretched. Gomez’s ring sits comfortably between those extremes.
The Marquise Cut Has a Much Older Story
Although Selena Gomez has brought fresh attention to the marquise, the shape itself has a much longer history. Its origins are commonly traced to 18th century France, when King Louis XV is said to have commissioned a diamond shape inspired by the smile of Madame de Pompadour, who held the title Marquise de Pompadour. The shape eventually became known as the marquise.
It has appeared repeatedly in high profile jewellery over the years. Jackie Kennedy Onassis owned a famous marquise diamond, Victoria Beckham received a marquise engagement ring from David Beckham, and Jennifer Lopez has also worn the shape in engagement jewellery.
So Gomez did not introduce the marquise to celebrity jewellery. What her engagement ring did was place an old diamond shape into a very current setting and make people look at it differently again.
Why Selena’s Ring Does Not Feel Like a Vintage Re-Creation
Because of its history, the marquise can easily lean towards a vintage look. Gomez’s ring avoids feeling like a reproduction of an antique piece by combining the historic shape with more contemporary design choices.
The yellow gold gives the ring warmth, the pavé diamonds create a polished finish, and the clean centre setting keeps attention on the silhouette of the marquise. The more substantial band also feels different from the ultra thin engagement ring bands that had been particularly common in previous years.
Jewellers interviewed by ELLE said they had already noticed clients moving towards wider and more substantial bands, with Gomez’s ring adding further attention to the look. That combination is part of what makes the design feel current: it uses a historic diamond shape without trying to make the entire ring look vintage.
Did Selena Gomez Bring the Marquise Diamond Back?
Interest in marquise diamonds had already been growing before Gomez announced her engagement, particularly as buyers became more interested in elongated fancy shapes. Her ring, however, clearly gave the marquise another highly visible moment.
Jewellers told ELLE that requests for marquise diamonds had been increasing and accelerated after Gomez revealed her ring. They also described the shape as a natural follow on from the oval, another elongated diamond that had dominated engagement ring trends in recent years. Brides later highlighted the marquise among the notable engagement ring shapes gaining momentum after Gomez’s 2024 engagement.
Celebrity jewellery often works this way. A shape may have existed for generations, but the right ring on the right person can completely change how people see it. In Gomez’s case, the marquise began to look less like a diamond associated with another era and more like a fresh alternative to the shapes buyers had already been seeing everywhere.
What Makes Selena Gomez’s Ring Memorable
The estimated carat weight and six figure valuation attracted plenty of headlines, but they are not the most memorable part of the ring. The most interesting detail is that Benny Blanco remembered the diamond shape Selena Gomez had wanted for years.
That gave the design a starting point that had little to do with what other celebrities were wearing at the time. Even the development of the ring reflects that approach. Large baguettes were considered and removed, the setting was refined, and the proportions were kept substantial enough to support the centre stone without distracting from its shape.
The finished piece therefore feels recognisably connected to Gomez rather than simply looking like another oversized celebrity engagement ring. Its scale makes it impressive, but its personal reference is what gives the design a story beyond its price.
An Old Diamond Shape in a New Moment
Selena Gomez’s engagement ring brings together several qualities that might otherwise seem contradictory. The marquise is historic, yet the finished ring feels modern. The centre diamond is substantial, but the setting remains relatively restrained. The design received worldwide attention, but the most important reason behind the choice was personal rather than public.
The ring has certainly helped renew interest in marquise diamonds, but that was never the reason the shape was chosen in the first place. For Gomez, the connection to the marquise existed long before the engagement and long before the shape became part of another jewellery trend.
That is what makes the story behind her engagement ring more interesting than its estimated price or carat weight. The marquise came first. The trend followed.
